Room For Improvement

But of course there are a few things I want to work on over the next few months:

1) Eating: After realizing I lost 10 lbs, I may have relaxed my eating habits a bit too much. Its not just the weight gain, its also the general yucky feeling I get after eating too many carbs or too much cheese. Especially cheese with carbs.  I keep going back on forth on whether to start tracking calories again---it was a lot of work, but it did help me make meaningful---and mostly painless---changes.

2) Attitude: As I nag at B to "stop whining and complaining" I realize i need to model better behavior on this front. I'm just not one of those bouncy cheery types---sarcasm, cynicism and well aimed complaints come pretty natural to me. In honesty, I'm pretty happy with my life, warts (whining kids) and all. I need to let that show through more.

3) Home projects: I have this dress I love that has a small hole in a back seam. I've been meaning to mend it for 6 MONTHS. Did I mention I LOVE the dress? And that the hole is small? I want to set aside one evening/week for taking care of these kind of nagging tasks. This includes selling/donating old baby items and clothes, weeding the sidewalk in front, ironing clothes so I can actually wear them, and other such un-fun, easy to put off tasks. Maybe I can watch Gilmore Girls while I do it.

4) Exercise: this is in combination with #1. Since I don't want to cut back on eating that much, I also want to add one intense workout a week to my routine (I work out 3 days/week when I can). Since G and I rotate mornings, I'll need to add an evening workout. I haven't exercised anytime except early AM for about 8 years so getting myself out there will be the first battle. I've put a Thursday 6:30 bodypump class on my calendar. Lets see how it goes.

Yeah, nothing enormous on this list. Its a good sign, right?

  1. Whoa! 10 lbs is amazing! Curious as to what you cut out. For me, the universal culprit seems to be breakfast #2. If I can avoid eating that and slide into lunch without starving to death, a feat that becomes easier on each successive day I try to make myself do it, I find that I re-equilibriate at a weight that is about 3 lbs lower than otherwise. And oh, do those three lbs make a difference in how I feel.

Bodypump class might actually kill me now. Looking forward to hearing how that goes. It sounds like fun.

    1. Honestly, I'm not sure. I counted calories and made sure my intake was enough less than output to lose 0.5 lb/week. That did nothing for 3 months. Then I started strength training and eating the same amount (not counting anything) and lost 10 pounds in 3 months. Then I realized how much I was losing and added a "second breakfast" because I didn't want to lose more (my face looked sickly) and then just started overall eating way more and it spiraled a bit out of control and here I am, the same weight I was when I started.
I LOVE bodypump, it damn near kills me each time.

    2. I think just the act of counting calories caused me to eat less. Way less likely to snack, or have that second glass of wine, when I had to enter it into the app and see the numbers move into the "red"

    3. Our last au pair lost 30 lbs twice (yes, she gained it all back x1) counting calories. It's sooooo easy to forget about that cookie you ate or that 2nd breakfast bar or glass of wine unless you keep track on paper (or phone). I think this is why Weight Watchers works so well, though I don't get that thing they do with "points."

  2. Ana, I could have written #3, including the Gilmore Girls aside! Our front door knob literally has tape across the screws to keep it in place, and yet it's taken me FOREVER to deal with it. And I have a bag of cloth diapers to donate. And pretty much every room in the house needs some kind of attention. A lot of nagging small things I inevitably feel better when I address but I just can't. Or maybe it's that there are so many of them some just stay on the list as newer urgent ones crop up?

Since I'm working from home this summer, I'm trying to take care of some of these things as 'breaks' from writing. Today I cleaned the desk drawer that holds office supplies.

  3. Good luck! And yes on watching tv while mending. :)

  4. Good luck on the evening workouts! Always a challenge but for a class it will be doable. The body pump is different from the boot camp class you were doing before, no?

  5. That is a good sign. All small, do-able things, albeit needing energy to get them started. I am so with you on #1. When I tracked calories, it was a pain but I ate better. Now I'm not and I'm back to my old habits.

  6. I love body pump, and I'm sad that I haven't found time to work out any more! I had some small things to do this summer, too, and I finally jumped in and did one of them, which made the rest of them seem much more do-able. One at a time. Maybe the black dress first. :)

  7. Oh, those small home repair things are the worst for me! I don't want to give up all my relaxation time or feel like I'm constantly "doing." And yet, how are all these things going to get done?? I'll put off the littlest things forever.
